Virtual Learning

I will be teaching two live online classes through the Genealogical Society of Broward County (GSBC) as a fundraiser, and students will receive a discount for joining. You do not need to live in Broward (or Florida) to enroll.

This interactive class will be limited to 15 people, and students will have access to video recordings for a limited time afterwards along with multiple handouts. There will be optional homework to allow students to practice techniques and strategies from class.

Family History Basics  

This comprehensive 12-hour course over 6 weeks is for those new to family history. It will include basic resources and methodology such census, vital records and using search engines. But for those with a few years experience, it will cover significantly more. Record collections not often used by beginners will be explored, including military, tax and voter records, city directories, and newspapers. Methodology will include research plans/log, collateral research, and introduction to the Genealogical Proof Standards.
 

Student level: For the beginning hobbyist who has little or no genealogy experience to those with several years of experience.

Schedule: Weekly – Wednesdays, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM EST; 6 sessions; starting April 21, 2021, ending May 26

Beyond Genealogy Basics 

This in-depth 6 week course over 12-hours is designed for those who have grasped the fundamentals of solid genealogical research and are ready to move beyond. Topics will include citing sources, court records/laws, land records, genealogy education, probate/wills, FamilySearch Wikis, using DNA to find ancestors, Genealogical Proof Standards, finding unindexed records, naming patterns, FAN/cluster research – and much more.
 

Prerequisite – Family History Basics or at least a year of genealogy experience.

Schedule: Weekly – Thursdays, 2 PM – 4 PM EST; 6 sessions; starting April 22, 2021, ending May 27

Jewish Genealogy Basics  

Along with learning general family history principles and resources, this 6-class, 12-hour class will focus on what makes searching for Jewish ancestors unique, including a wide range of Jewish records, immigration records and other specific challenges to Jewish genealogy research.

Student level: For the beginning hobbyist who has little or no genealogy experience.
